How much do Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic cost in Ireland?

The starting price is only part of the bill. An Irish guide to pharmacy prices, dose changes, public funding and the cost of staying on treatment.

Prices and sources checked 14 September 2026. Republic of Ireland; adult treatment. Advertised prices are examples, not guaranteed quotes or a national price survey. This is general information, not a recommendation to start, switch or stop a medicine.

Calculate the longer-term budget: Our GLP-1 Cost Calculator for Ireland lets you compare ongoing medication, consultations and monitoring costs over a period you choose. Check the GLP-1 HSE and medical card funding guide before assuming any private price will be reimbursed. The examples below are dated observations, not guaranteed current prices.

A price beginning with “from” can answer the wrong question. It tells you what the first purchase might cost. It does not necessarily tell you what you will pay after the dose changes, how much clinical care costs, or whether you can afford treatment over time.

For someone paying privately, those details are not small print. They are the budget.

The short answer: we found an advertised Ozempic starter pen at €130, a Wegovy starter pen at €200, and a Mounjaro starter pen at €238. Those are specific pharmacy listings—not interchangeable treatment options or typical prices for every dose. The higher-dose examples below reach €295 for Wegovy and €585 for Mounjaro. Laois: Ozempic/Wegovy, Laois: Mounjaro, Healthwave: Wegovy, Healthwave: Mounjaro.

First, these are not three versions of the same prescription

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but their authorised uses differ. Ozempic treats insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes in adults. Wegovy is authorised for weight management in eligible patients. A lower Ozempic price does not make it a straightforward substitute for Wegovy. EMA: Ozempic, EMA: Wegovy.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Its EU authorisation includes type 2 diabetes and adult weight management under specified conditions. For adult weight management, the BMI thresholds are at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related condition; Wegovy has corresponding adult thresholds. Eligibility still requires a clinical assessment. EMA: Mounjaro, EMA: Wegovy.

Milligrams are not comparable across different active ingredients. A 5 mg tirzepatide dose is not “twice as strong” as a 2.4 mg semaglutide dose. The useful comparison is the appropriate treatment and its total cost—not the amount printed on the box.

Pregnancy changes the treatment decision completely. Current European product information does not recommend these medicines during pregnancy; see our evidence review of GLP-1s and pregnancy, including washout periods for semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Retatrutide is different again: it is still investigational and has no legitimate Irish pharmacy price. See Retatrutide in Ireland: availability, Phase 2/3 results and comparison with Mounjaro and Wegovy.

What Irish pharmacies advertise

These examples come directly from pharmacies’ published price tables. They exclude any assumption that a consultation, delivery or future refill will be free. Contact the dispensing pharmacy for the exact product, pack and final amount.

Mounjaro 2.5 mg€238 at Laois Pharmacy; €265 at Healthwave; €289 at McGorisks.

There is a reason to get a written quote. Laois’s general Ozempic page groups Mounjaro 2.5 mg and 5 mg beside €238, while its dedicated Mounjaro page lists 5 mg at €315. We have used the dedicated page for that dose, but the discrepancy needs confirmation before purchase. General table, dedicated page.

Why the bill can change after the first pen

Starting doses help introduce treatment; they are not a promise of a permanent low-cost prescription. Mounjaro’s adult maintenance doses are 5, 10 or 15 mg weekly, according to its EU product information. The prescriber determines whether an increase is appropriate. EMA product information.

Sources: Healthwave’s Wegovy and Mounjaro price tables, checked 14 September 2026. Listed prices do not prove current stock. The pharmacy’s descriptive copy has inconsistencies about single-dose versus multi-dose pens; confirm that a quote covers the intended four weekly doses. These prices do not establish a dose-equivalent comparison.

The table shows the cost of different prescriptions, not a schedule to follow. Do not increase, divide or space out doses to make the numbers fit. If affordability is a problem, raise it with the prescriber before committing to treatment.

Four weeks is not a calendar month

Wegovy FlexTouch and Mounjaro KwikPen presentations can contain four weekly doses. The European product documents specify the presentations; not every pen sold under a brand name has the same format. Wegovy, Mounjaro.

For a four-dose pen, 12 pens cover 48 weeks; 13 cover 52 weeks. Multiplying a four-week price by 12 therefore understates a 52-week budget by one pen.

Here is a deliberately simple illustration, using round hypothetical prices rather than predicting anyone’s prescription:

What a fixed four-week cost means over 52 weeks
Assumed cost per four weeks52-week total / monthly savings budget
€200€2,600 / about €217 a month
€300€3,900 / €325 a month
€500€6,500 / about €542 a month

Compound arithmetic: four-week cost × 13; savings budget = that total ÷ 12, rounded to the nearest euro. Assumes an unchanged price, uninterrupted treatment and four weekly doses per purchase. Excludes consultations and other charges. A 52-week illustration is not an exact calendar-year quotation or a recommendation for treatment duration.

Ask for two estimates: the likely cost during dose adjustment, and the cost if you remain on the planned maintenance prescription. That is more useful than extrapolating the cheapest starter price over a year.

Will the medical card or Drugs Payment Scheme help?

At the time of checking, the HSE says Wegovy and tirzepatide/Mounjaro are not covered by the medical card, Long-Term Illness Scheme or Drugs Payment Scheme. Having a card does not, by itself, make these prescriptions reimbursable. HSE funding information.

The HSE states that Ozempic is available on the medical card and Long-Term Illness Scheme only for people with type 2 diabetes. That is not public funding for an Ozempic prescription solely for weight loss. Ask the pharmacist or prescriber to check your particular eligibility. HSE.

Saxenda is a separate option: the HSE describes restricted medical-card/DPS access for people meeting specific criteria. It is not automatically interchangeable with these weekly medicines. An assessment or a headline about possible future funding is not the same as an approved entitlement. Check the current position before budgeting on State support. HSE.

For eligibility, the €80 DPS limit and the Saxenda application process, see our detailed HSE funding guide.

The other costs worth asking about

A pharmacy consultation is not necessarily the prescribing consultation. McGorisks explicitly excludes the doctor’s consultation fee from its Mounjaro prices. Laois lists a separate €10 cold-chain delivery charge on its Mounjaro page. McGorisks, Laois.

Before paying, ask:

  • Does this quote cover the exact strength and four prescribed weekly doses?
  • Are the initial assessment and repeat prescriptions separate charges?
  • What follow-up is included, and who helps if side effects develop?
  • Are needles, delivery and any clinically necessary tests included?
  • Is this a one-off introductory price, or the normal refill price?
  • What happens if the prescribed strength is unavailable?

These questions let you compare the same bundle of medicine and care. They also help distinguish an expensive-looking service that includes follow-up from a lower headline price with charges added later.

Cost matters. So does safe, sustainable treatment.

This is not a “best injection for the money” ranking. Suitability, other medicines, tolerability and the reason for treatment belong in the clinical decision. For the wider evidence, including comparative trial results and what can happen after stopping, read our guide to the rise of GLP-1 medicines in Ireland.

These treatments can cause gastrointestinal side effects, and serious symptoms should not be dismissed as the price of losing weight. Persistent severe abdominal pain needs urgent medical assessment. Pregnancy plans and other medicines also require discussion with the prescriber. These are selected cautions, not a complete safety checklist. EMA: Mounjaro, EMA: Wegovy.

Avoid supposed bargain pens, drops or patches from unregulated sellers. In March 2026, the HPRA reported testing seized patches marketed as containing semaglutide and finding that the tested products did not contain it. A familiar medicine name on a listing is not evidence of authenticity. Use a regulated prescribing and pharmacy pathway. HPRA warning.

The useful question is not simply “Which one starts cheapest?” It is: “What will my prescribed treatment and follow-up actually cost—and can I sustain that?” Take that question to the appointment. It deserves as clear an answer as the medical ones.

If cost makes continuation difficult, our stopping-treatment guide explains the evidence and follow-up questions. For symptoms affecting tolerability, see side effects and when to get help.

How we checked this comparison

We used pharmacies’ own public listings as evidence of their advertised prices, not as independent evidence of efficacy or safety. Clinical distinctions come from the EMA; the funding position comes from the HSE. We did not telephone pharmacies, verify stock or conduct an exhaustive market survey. Conflicting product descriptions are flagged rather than treated as confirmed pack details.
