SOLAR PV / BUYER'S CHECKLIST

Know what you're actually buying.

A quote for “premium panels” and a “hybrid inverter” is not a specification. Ask for exact models, usable energy, rated power, installation scope and a clear warranty.

Check PV nameplate capacity

Use the panel count and wattage stated on a quote to verify the advertised solar kWp. This is arithmetic, not a predicted annual energy yield or an electrical design approval.

CALCULATED PV ARRAY

—

Enter model details to check nameplate values.

Module calculation—
DC / AC nameplate ratio—

Array kWp = module count × rated module watts ÷ 1,000. DC/AC ratio = nameplate array kWp ÷ rated inverter AC output in kW. A higher ratio is not automatically better or worse: ask the installer about panel orientation, temperature, shading, inverter clipping, grid limits and projected annual generation.

Solar panels

Compare the precise manufacturer model, watts per module, dimensions, product warranty, performance warranty and warranted degradation. A larger watt rating alone is not a quality score: roof layout and total annual kWh matter more than marketing terms.

Discuss roof constraints using the solar system-sizing guide.

String, hybrid or microinverter?

A string inverter serves connected panels, a compatible hybrid inverter can handle batteries, and microinverters convert at individual panels. Shading, roof directions, future battery plans, serviceability, warranty and cost influence which fits your property. Ask which battery models are compatible and what future conversion would cost.

Battery specifications

Compare usable kWh rather than nominal capacity, round-trip efficiency, power output in kW, capacity retention, cycle warranty and battery location. Backup sockets during a power cut require purpose-designed changeover/isolation and are not automatically included.

Assess the economics separately using our battery payback calculator.

Monitoring, install and aftercare

Check module and inverter model numbers, mounting, roof fixings, scaffolding, earthing, required electrical works, commissioning, smart-meter/export registration, app/data access and whether labour and travel are covered under aftercare. Make sure the price includes all essentials and specific exclusions.

Use the quote comparator for a whole-package comparison.
