Binance is investigating a suspected major hack after unusually large transfers from wallets linked to the cryptocurrency exchange on Thursday, 29 October. The crucial caveat: the amount actually stolen has not been confirmed.

Binance says its security team is urgently investigating and has reassured customers that their funds are safe. Founder Changpeng Zhao, who no longer manages the exchange, said the activity appeared to be a hack and that he expected customer funds to be covered.

Billions frozen—but that is not a final loss figure

Reuters reported that Tether froze nearly $1.57 billion in USDT, while Circle froze more than $800 million in USDC associated with the incident. These are dollar-linked stablecoins.

The headline figure circulating elsewhere is much larger. BleepingComputer reported that Arkham was tracking wallets holding approximately $5.78 billion in assets linked to the suspected exploit.

That wallet valuation is not the same as a verified $5.78 billion theft. Binance had not confirmed the total stolen, how the suspected breach happened, or whether the transfers were unauthorised in the reporting reviewed for this article.

Freezing assets and returning them to their rightful owners are also different milestones. A freeze should not be read as confirmation that customers have already been repaid.

What matters next

The important questions are how much left Binance without authorisation, how much can be recovered, and whether any customer balances are affected. Until those answers arrive, claims about a record-breaking final loss remain premature.

Binance has also warned about scams exploiting the uncertainty. Customers should use its official app or website for updates and be wary of unsolicited messages offering help or requesting account information.

For investors, the broader lesson is that the price of a crypto asset and the security of the platform holding it are separate risks. A reassuring statement matters; a verified account of what happened matters more.
