Estimate a household cash gap before thinking about income protection benefits. This is a spending scenario, not an insurance quote or statutory-benefit calculation.
Estimated amount not covered by your savings.
Method: The modelled monthly gap is max(€0, essential spending − other continuing income). It multiplies that by months without full employer sick pay, then subtracts accessible savings, with a floor of zero. Assumes full sick pay covers that gap during the months entered. It does not include State Illness Benefit, waiting periods, taxes, benefit offsets, partial sick pay, investment income, inflation or insurer eligibility. Those can all change the real result. START WITH THE PURPOSE
Understanding what triggers a claim matters more than selecting the lowest advertised monthly premium.
| Protection | Main purpose | Usually does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Life insurance | Eligible death during the insured term, or throughout life for qualifying whole-of-life contracts. | Ordinary life-only cover does not pay automatically on illness diagnosis or job loss. |
| Mortgage protection | Help repay the mortgage following an insured borrower's death. | Ordinary cover does not replace monthly wages or routine household spending. |
| Income protection | Replace part of eligible earnings if sickness or injury prevents working after the deferred period. | Unemployment, general redundancy or all pre-illness earnings. |
| Private health insurance | Contribute towards specific covered healthcare costs and access arrangements. | A general income-replacement lump sum or universal payment for every treatment. |
Every insurer and policy defines benefits, eligibility, exclusions and limits differently. Review policy wordings and the current independent guidance of the CCPC. For Irish private health insurance plans, use the Health Insurance Authority comparison tool.

INSURANCE FAQ
General personal life insurance is optional. Mortgage protection is normally required for a mortgage on your main home, subject to statutory exceptions. Learn about the distinctions in the mortgage protection guide.
No. These tools estimate needs and compare arithmetic scenarios only. Insurers price policies using factors such as cover amount, term, age, health, tobacco use and underwriting decisions.
For suitable mortgage protection, borrowers can normally choose a provider other than their mortgage lender, provided the lender accepts the cover and assignment arrangements. Compare terms and final accepted premiums before switching.
It may reduce your additional cover needs, but verify its amount, eligibility, nominated beneficiaries and what happens if you change job or retire. Only count benefits genuinely available to survivors.
