Switching insurance can cut annual spending, but savings disappear if the new policy removes valuable protection. This calculator totals user-entered premiums across four insurance categories and subtracts one-off charges. It does not recommend switching or compare coverage quality.

How much can you save by switching insurance in Ireland?

Insurance shopping is often done one renewal at a time. A household may have car, home, private health and life protection policies with different renewal dates. Reviewing them as a group can make the total premium commitment more visible, while each contract still needs to be assessed individually.

This tool compares the annual premium paid now with the annual premium for an alternative across up to four policy types. It calculates the nominal annual difference and multiplies that by a chosen period, subtracting any one-off switch/cancellation charges you enter.

Worked example

Suppose home insurance is €480 now versus €415 on an alternative, car is €700 versus €630, health is €1,600 versus €1,530, and life cover is €360 versus €330.

The existing annual total is €3,140 and the alternative is €2,905, an illustrative €235 annual difference. Over three unchanged years, that gives €705 before charges. With €60 of one-off charges, the nominal result is €645.

These are made-up example premiums for arithmetic, not live quotes. Insurance prices commonly change at renewal; this calculator assumes they are unchanged solely to illustrate scale. It does not adjust for inflation, discounting or changes in cover.

Check home insurance cover and excesses

A lower home premium can come with a higher compulsory excess, reduced accidental damage, lower buildings cover or different flood and subsidence treatment. Make sure the insured rebuilding value is appropriate. Use our home rebuilding-cost calculator to explore a basic sum insured.

Car insurance: read the details

Compare the same driver and usage information, driving restrictions, policy excesses, optional breakdown assistance, windscreen cover and no-claims bonus treatment. A cheaper policy can have different exclusions. Do not misstate your driving profile to lower premiums.

Health insurance: benefits matter as much as price

A new health plan may change approved hospitals, inpatient excesses, outpatient caps or waiting period arrangements. Use the HIA independent comparison tool to compare actual Irish plans; Compound's health insurance cost comparison calculator can help model user-entered scenarios.

Life cover: switching can be risky

Never cancel existing life insurance or mortgage protection until appropriate replacement cover has been fully underwritten, accepted and placed in force. A lower preliminary online premium may increase after medical underwriting—or the insurer could refuse cover.

Age and health changes, policy term, existing exclusions, joint versus dual cover, critical illness features and lender assignments can make two policies materially different. Read the Life Insurance Ireland guide and Mortgage Protection Savings tool.

How to use the result

A positive annual difference means lower premiums if the replacement policy prices are as entered. A negative difference means the new combined premiums are higher. A positive multiyear result can still conceal a worse insurance contract. Treat the output as a shortlist for deeper comparison, not a recommendation to switch.

If an insurer charges a fee to cancel or replace a policy, include it. Some providers offer promotional rates for one year; don't extrapolate a time-limited discount across a five-year horizon without acknowledging the assumption.

FAQ

Does a cheaper premium mean I should switch?

No. Equivalent cover and accepted underwriting matter, especially for life insurance.

Is this a live quote comparison engine?

No. Every premium must be supplied by you from an actual quotation or renewal document.

Are the savings guaranteed for three or five years?

No. Annual premiums and terms can change and the horizon assumes a fixed figure solely for illustration.

Are broker fees included?

Only if you add them in the one-off fees field. Verify any cost and commission information separately.
