Earnings preview, published before the release on 21 October 2026. Meta’s next report should be judged on the relationship between advertising performance and the cash required to support its AI ambitions.

Meta has scheduled its third-quarter results for after the US market closes on Wednesday, 21 October. Its conference call is set for 4:30pm Eastern time—9:30pm in Ireland on that date.

This article sets out what to examine when the figures arrive. It contains no claimed Q3 results, invented earnings beat or assumed market reaction. The Meta company page is the home for the continuing financial record.

The question behind the headline earnings number

A strong revenue quarter would be useful evidence about demand, but it would not settle the return on all current investment. An increase in earnings can coexist with weaker cash flow when spending on long-lived infrastructure rises.

The analytical task is to understand both the operating engine and what shareholders must reinvest to keep it growing. A company does not become attractive merely by reporting more revenue if the capital needed to produce that revenue rises faster without an adequate future payoff.

Equally, lower current free cash flow does not automatically establish poor capital allocation. Investment can create future earning capacity. Investors need to test that case rather than assume it.

Five things to read in the release

Area Question for the results
Advertising How much growth comes from impressions versus price?
Operating costs Are costs growing faster or slower than revenue?
Capital spending Has management changed the scale or timing of investment?
Cash generation How much cash remains after investment, using the disclosed definition?
Outlook What does guidance imply for the next period, and what remains uncertain?

This is a reading framework, not a forecast. Where a metric is not disclosed, the honest answer is that the release does not provide it.

Advertising growth needs a quality check

More advertising revenue can reflect several influences: more opportunities to display ads, higher prices, changes in engagement or broader advertiser demand. Those explanations have different implications for durability.

Investors should be careful about attributing every improvement to AI. Evidence that a tool helps advertisers is valuable, but a group revenue increase alone does not isolate the contribution of that tool.

The stronger case would connect better advertiser outcomes to repeat spending and then to cash generation after the costs of delivering the improvement. Any causal claim should be supported by the company’s disclosures and treated with appropriate caution.

Capital expenditure and profit arrive on different timetables

A long-lived asset usually affects cash flow when purchased, while its cost is recognised in profit over time through depreciation. That timing difference is why reading only the income statement can miss the scale of an infrastructure buildout.

Look at the cash-flow statement, the capital-expenditure definition and any financing arrangements discussed in the release. Compare consistent periods and watch for working-capital movements that temporarily flatter or depress cash generation.

A useful report would explain how new capacity supports demand and when management expects the benefits. A spending increase without that connection leaves shareholders doing more of the forecasting themselves.

How to avoid overreacting to the first headline

Separate reported figures from guidance, and both from analyst expectations. Check whether an unusually large gain, expense or tax item changes the comparison. A “beat” against a forecast is not the same as improvement in the underlying economics.

Our Meta stock guide provides the broader framework. Tonight’s release will supply the evidence for updating it.

The most useful result would combine resilient demand with a credible account of the resources required to serve it. That is the test to apply once the numbers are public—not a conclusion to announce before they arrive.
