MICROGENERATION / CLEAN EXPORT GUARANTEE

The best export rate isn't always the best deal.

Export credit is only one part of your electricity bill. Compare two supplier offers using your own annual imported and exported kWh, import rates, export rates, standing charges and discounts.

Method: annual net cost = imported kWh × import €/kWh + daily standing charge × 365 + annual other net fees − exported kWh × export €/kWh. Use VAT-inclusive customer rates and keep the import/export volumes the same for both offers. This flat-rate illustration excludes time-of-use variation, eligibility terms, conditional discounts not entered, switching charges, export-payment tax treatment and future price changes. A negative result indicates a net credit before unmodelled fees. Check actual supplier tariffs before switching.

How solar export payments work

Ireland's Clean Export Guarantee pays eligible microgenerators for metered kWh sent to the grid. Your installer submits ESB Networks connection notification (NC6 or NC7 as appropriate); the supplier then receives the relevant export data. The payment normally appears as a credit on your electricity bill or in a separate statement.

Use CRU's microgeneration guide for the official process.

Compare more than the export figure

A higher export tariff can be offset by a higher import rate or standing charge. Ask whether export remuneration requires you to buy electricity from the same supplier, whether rates are fixed, and when the contract or any introductory discount expires.

For storage decisions, use the battery economics tool to consider export payments you would forgo.

Get your own data

ESB Networks' customer portal provides metered import/export information including half-hour interval data where available. Check your annual usage, solar yield assumptions and current supply contract before accepting a supplier offer. Where you have a smart time-of-use tariff, a single blended import rate is only an approximation.
