Can I hold this share, bond or ETF in an Irish PIA?

PIA Centre · Checked 7 November 2026 against the Bill as introduced on 19 October. Final rules and provider terms may change.

There are two questions to answer before choosing a provider for a particular investment. Does the investment meet the conditions in the proposed Irish account rules? Will that provider actually let you buy the exact security? A provider can offer a narrower menu than the legislation permits.

If you want to hold… What to check under the October Bill
An individual share Identify the exchange where the share is admitted to trading. The draft covers regulated EEA markets and equivalent markets outside the EEA.
A bond Check the issue and its market admission. A familiar issuer can have several bonds with different terms and trading arrangements.
An ETF Identify the fund’s legal structure. The draft includes eligible EEA-authorised UCITS and excludes structured UCITS and personal portfolio investment undertakings. An ETF label alone cannot settle eligibility.
An insurance-based investment The draft includes qualifying insurance-based products and excludes personal portfolio life policies. Ask the insurer which product and funds its account would offer.

A practical check for an S&P 500 fund

Start with the ISIN, the identifier for the precise share class. Two funds tracking the same index can have different domiciles, structures or fees. Find the issuer’s factsheet and prospectus, check whether the fund is an EEA-authorised UCITS, then ask the provider to confirm the ISIN in its PIA investment list. An index name or an ordinary brokerage search result leaves that last question open.

For a US share, give the provider the company name, exchange and share class. Ask for written confirmation of availability inside its Irish investment account and the cost of trading in dollars. An announcement that a provider intends to launch gives no assurance about an individual ticker.

Compare provider announcements and work out the euro cost of fees.
